Pattern in Architecture

Architecture impacts us deeply, most often unconsciously. Shapes and lines within a space can direct our movement and influence our inner balance. Color can motivate, inspire and move us to joy, even soothe us in healing ways.

Pattern, too, can affect us. Busy patterns stimulate us, generating energy. A subtle pattern or the absence of pattern can calm us and allow the mind to wander freely. Our eyes tend to move across solid planes until they find a resting place–a detail or object that briefly holds our interest.

Pattern exists in a variety of media. A repetition of elements can be orchestrated to create visual interest or move us through space to a desired destination.

The materials selected for an architectural project play a significant role in the overall design objective. When a series of elements come together, the pattern created can be complex or profoundly simple and contribute greatly to the overall experience. Paint, metals, woods, furnishings, carpeting, window treatments, and so much more are all contributors.

Integrating nature’s inherent rhythm into an architectural project can be pleasing. Light, shadow, and landscape features can all create or enhance pattern.

Overall, when architecture is practiced with the belief that all elements contribute equally to the whole, pattern can influence the experience of interacting with space and should be considered when envisioning the final outcome.
